particular average (also less frequently ‘average particular’) (: as distinguished from General Average, is a loss upon the ship, cargo, or freight, severally, to be borne by the owner of the particular property on which it happens; and, in cases where the loss is not total, it is called average or partial loss. In every case of partial loss the underwriter is liable to pay such proportion of the sum he has subscribed as the damage sustained by the whole value at the time of insurance.)
